Brussels – May 2011. The European Parliament’s sub-committee on human rights will be holding a hearing on the important issue of freedom of religion or belief. This hearing, to take place on Thursday 26 May, is motivated by the concern that for many, the full exercise of this right, enshrined in article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Right, still faces many infringements around the world. The participation of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Dr. Heiner Bielefeldt, will contribute to increase the understanding and practical implications of this right. EPRID members will also be present, both to provide an overview on why freedom of religion or belief matters and to present the reality of the infringements: concrete cases of religious persecutions, discriminatory legislation, minorities at risk.
